The Miller Tanner difference is our people. That’s why we want to introduce you to our team of superstars that brings our corporate meetings and events to life for our clients. Today we introduce you to Matthew Fetzer, Senior Software Engineer. Matthew works diligently, behind the scenes with our Technology Department, developing user-friendly technology solutions for our clients and Miller Tanner Associates (MTA).
Meet Matthew Fetzer
Tell us about your current role with Miller Tanner Associates (MTA)? What are your primary responsibilities?
I am the Senior Software Engineer for MTA and primarily work with the Event Planner (EP) and on-demand training (ODT) systems. Generally, my job is to maintain our code, build most of our more complex modules in EP or ODT, and assist our other developers. I also handle creating our release packages when we push to our production servers.
How long have you been with MTA? This September will be my third year at MTA.
What did you do before joining MTA?
Before MTA, I worked for a military contractor and at the same time, I was finishing up my schooling for my computer science degree.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I enjoy being able to work on a lot of interesting projects and have a lot of leeway on how these modules should be built. In past jobs, most projects I worked on had strict guidelines and allowed very little input from the engineer. Working at MTA has allowed me to try out a lot of new technologies and coding patterns that I would not have been able to do before.
Where do you live and what do you love most about your area?
I currently live in Puyallup, Washington. I moved here a little less than two years ago from California. I really like the rainy weather here that I didn’t really get in California. Definitely one place to visit here would be Pikes Market in Seattle. It has a lot of really interesting shops and a lot of great food.
What do you do for fun?
I love watching sports and am a huge Lakers fan; I have probably only missed three Lakers games in the past three years. I also try to play with my dogs often, whether it’s throwing the ball in the backyard, taking walks, or just wrestling with them in the living room.
What makes Miller Tanner stand out as meeting planning company?
A lot of people treat working for this company as more of a lifestyle rather than a job. What I mean by that is people here aren’t just putting in their time and punching out but rather they actually care what their work will do for the company and for the clients. So you will see customer service that goes the extra mile. An example would be that we had a request from a client for our ODT system that, at most companies, would either be ignored or pushed off to a much later release. However, we implemented the request and had it on our production servers within a day. We love opportunities like this to serve our clients.
What are some of your favorite tech trends?
I really love the push for open source projects and tools that people make. Things like Bootstrap, jQuery, etc. really are the reason why so much improvement on the internet has happened. Because of this, it has become much easier and cheaper to develop on the web.
